While judges Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh tried to boost his self-esteem, Cheryl Cole knocked him back down again when she told him ‘You just don’t do it for me’.

Before performing, Danyl admitted he had been upset by some of the nasty criticism he had read about himself on the internet.

He said: ‘I was completely devastated to be in the bottom two last week. Someone posted on Twitter that I’m more hated than Hitler.’

After consistently good performances during the auditions and previous live shows, Danyl’s vocals were noticeably below par as he sang the rock classic.

Dannii said: ‘I felt like it was sad to see, you’ve lost your mojo.

‘I feel like you’ve been stripped back too much and it’s not your natural performance.

‘At the end of the song you hit your stride and the big notes were fantastic, but it was out of tune right at the beginning then throughout.

Louis continued: ‘There’s no way you should have been in the bottom two last week, absolutely no way. This is a talent show, and you’re a very talented guy.

‘I know you’ve had a setback, but I want people at home to give you a second chance. You have something special. Pick yourself up and get back in the race, because that’s life.’

Speaking to host Dermot O’Leary, Danyl admitted he was feeling incredibly low: ‘The song’s been hard and the week’s been hard. I need to pick myself up. I just want to impress you all.’

But while Danyl appeared to have taken a step back performance wise, other acts stepped up their game.

John and Edward provided Simon with his Hallowe’en nightmare as they performed Queen’s We Will Rock You.

Dressed like metallers with black eyeliner and their signature blonde hair dyed two-tone with black, the Irish twins shouted the rock anthem backed by a troupe of dancers.

Dannii conceded: ‘Well, it is Hallowe’en, and that was quite scary. I think you almost needed a SatNav to find your way back to the lyrics at some point.

‘I look forward to seeing you every week but I’m not sure I’d look forward to hearing you on the radio. You’ve really got to listen to the song.’

Simon continued with his weekly vitriol for the teenagers: ‘Well, it was night of the living dead. Singing Queen out of tune, possibly destroying Queen’s career forever.

‘Look, guys, I credit you with tenacity. You’ve stayed in the competition, you’re thick-skinned. However, you cannot, cannot defend that singing tonight.’

X Factor choreographer Brian Friedman has compared listening to John & Edward to “entering the gates of hell”.

The X Factor‘s live shows get started this Saturday night and bookies William Hill think that this could be Louis’s final appearance as an X Factor judge,  reports  Oddspreview.

The 57-year-old is 2/1 to be replaced in 2010 and 4/9 to be the first judge to have no acts left.

Hills are offering just 12/1 that that Louis’s acts are the first three acts to be voted off – a price which may seem short but is as short as 5/1 with Sky Bet.

“Louis did not have much to work with but he seems to have made a meal of his selections and there is a danger that he will start to look a bit of a clown,” said Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams.

Cheryl Cole is 3/1 to be the first mentor out of this year’s competition with Dannii Minogue a best price 12/1 with Boylesports.

Hill’s have cut the price of John and Edward being the first X Factor act to be eliminated from 15/8 to 7/4 favourites following a number of bets of up to £800. “We think Louis has lost it and we would be astounded if John and Edward don’t fall at the first hurdle,” added Adams.

Kat, Coco, Chemmane and Azi, who will be mentored by Louis Walsh in the live finals, said that lots of rumours about the group’s past are not accurate.

“Can I get one thing straight, we didn’t meet in a strip club,” Azi told Digital Spy. “For those of you who have been to a strip club, how can four girls meet and decide we’re going to form a band?”

“Me and Azi actually met at another girl band audition,” said Coco. “Azi got dropped and then we met the other girls at another audition a year ago. It was nothing to do with the stripping. When me and Azi met, neither of us were stripping and she’s only ever done it for a month.”

Addressing other tabloid reports about their private lives, Azi commented: “Some of these things said are hilarious. How can I be a WAG and a stripper? If I was a WAG shouldn’t my footballer be looking after me?”

The group also insisted that they will not go back to working as lapdancers if their pop career fails. “Stripping was a means to an end, at the end of the day,” said Azi. “Us as Kandy Rain is our future.”

Coco added: “We don’t regret it, but we’d like people to look past the stripping. That was only a tiny fraction of our lives. Kat is an amazing gymnast, Azi is a great songwriter, Chemmane has worked as a dance teacher all her life, I was studying law. These things are so far away from stripping.”

Whitney will perform on The October 18 Sunday X Factor results show.

“I have always loved my UK fans and I’m thrilled to perform for them on The X Factor,” she said. “I am also a fan of Simon Cowell’s and look forward to meeting him. It should be a fun night.”

Houston will release I Look To You, her first studio album since 2002, the day after her X Factor performance. The album debuted at number one on the US albums chart last month.

This week’s X Factor results show will feature performances from Robbie Williams and Alexandra Burke.

Early XFactor favourites include Danyl Johnson, and teenager Lucie Jones.

Irish twins John and Edward are also through – but have been named rank outsiders by bookmakers William Hill.

Lloyd Daniels made the grade despite judge Cheryl Cole voicing concerns about his age – he is just 16.

Cole, who sings with Girls Aloud, told the Welsh youngster: “When you came in and sang, you really delivered but what concerns me is mostly your age.

“I was 19 when I was given my opportunity and I struggled to cope with it.

“It involves a lot of maturity and there is a massive responsibility. I feel the responsibility because you are only 16.”

Cole, now 26, felt the pressure of responsibility during this weekend’s x factor selection process.

While speaking to Manchester hopeful Daniel Fox, she paused, then walked off the film set, saying: “It doesn’t feel right”.

Having collected her thoughts, she later returned to the set to tell Fox he had not made it through to the live finals.

Cole, along with her three fellow judges, Dannii Minogue, Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell will each mentor three acts over the coming weeks.

Minogue is looking after the under 25-year-old girls, and looked to her sister Kylie to help her make her selection.

Among the six contestants performing for the pair was Essex student Stacey Solomon, whose version of Over The Rainbow won high praise from Kylie.

She said: “I sang that song every night on tour for a while and it’s one you don’t want to mess up but, for me, it was flawless.”

Walsh put through Irish brothers John and Edward, saying he “saw something in you that none of the other judges saw”. The pair had been booed at auditions, while Cowell called them “obnoxious”.

Meanwhile, Cowell sent through 25-year-old energy adviser Olly Murs at the expense of Daniel Pearce, who was seeking a second shot at fame after the disintegration of boyband One True Voice.

“It was about giving somebody a first shot,” Cowell told the singer as he explained his decision.

The other acts to go through are: Rachel Adedeji, Miss Frank, Kandy Rain, Joseph McElderry, Rikki Loney and Jamie Archer, also known as Jamie Afro.
