Tonight’s show opens with Peter buying furniture for his new pad. He says: “I’ve never felt so low in my life. I know it’s a month gone and I know there are people saying, ‘Snap out of it – you left her so why are you feeling like this?’

“Thing is, nobody knows why I left her. If people knew, they’d get why I’m so upset.”

The News Of The World reports that “posh”  has been given the go ahead from Simon Cowell and the show’s creator Simon Fuller to become Paula Abdul’s replacement, after she proved popular at two trial auditions.

However bosses at the US network Fox, which produces the show, want to be certain that American audiences will like her – and that they won’t think she is too thin or have problems understanding her British accent.

“American Idol is the highest rated show and they don’t want to pick a judge viewers don’t take to,” an insider said. “Focus groups are going to be set up to judge Victoria’s performance.

“There’s some concern about whether viewers will think she’s too skinny. They’re also worried about her accent. She’s started to talk in a very posh voice and some people might struggle with that.”

Posh was drafted in as a temporary judge after Paula Abdul quit the show earlier this month.

She wasn’t her best at her first audition but Fuller, who is her manager and the creator of Idol, convinced her to come back,” a source told the paper.

The singer was breathalysed at the side of the road and taken into police custody after his £60,000 Range Rover crashed into the back of an articulated lorry.

He was held at the police station for almost five hours before being released without charge. Laurie Rowe, the driver of the lorry, said: ‘He seemed completely disorientated, like he had no idea what was going on.

He looked totally dazed and even tried to climb into the cab of my lorry. He kept saying he was worried he would go to jail.’

Michael, 46, crashed into the lorry on the A34 in Berkshire in the early hours yesterday.

Mr Rowe, from Scotland, said he saw the  Range Rover weaving from one side of the road to the other in his rear view mirror moments before the collision occurred.

The impact of the crash was so great the lorry driver feared Michael was dead.

‘He hit me so hard that it knocked my rear axle two feet up in the air,’ he said.

‘When I stopped the lorry and got out to see what had happened, I didn’t think he would have survived.’

Michael was taken to Lodden Valley police station, near Reading, and released without charge at 5.55am.

His arrest comes two months after he completed a two-year driving ban.

The singer had his licence taken away and was sentenced to 100 hours community service after he was found slumped at the wheel of his Mercedes in North London in October 2006.

He admitted a charge of driving while unfit in June the following year, saying he was guilty due to a combination of tiredness and having taken prescription drugs.
