MySpace lets users stream content free of charge, and looks set to compete with other free music services like Spotify, Last.FM and We7 – the service lets fans stream full albums and videos over artists’ MySpace accounts.

Courtney Holt, president of MySpace Music, said he believes the site – which has already launched in the US – can become one of the most popular of its kind in the UK.

“MySpace Music is the number one music site in America and since we have launched in Australia and New Zealand we have seen double the engagement [than previously], so we believe this is going to be great for MySpace in the UK,” he told BBC News.

Holt also claimed that the service was easy to use, saying: “We provide streaming audio, video, a comprehensive suite of artist tools, original content and programming all wrapped up together in one nice package.”

As well as major and independent labels, the service has the support of Apple. Each song is linked to iTunes, enabling fans to buy music at the click of a button. Although MySpace Music is free the service is funded by adverts.
