When Kelly Brook was axed as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent within a week, she was told in no uncertain terms that her career prospects in television looked far from promising.

Not because she was a gorgeous airhead who couldn’t string two words together, but because she had committed the cardinal sin of upsetting the undisputed kings of prime-time television entertainment – Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly Reports The Mail.

In her first newspaper interview since her sacking at the beginning of this year, the stunning 29-year-old says: ‘There was nothing I could do in this country after Britain’s Got Talent. The people at ITV were telling me that I had upset Ant and Dec and that was it.

I would love to have stayed on the show. I really felt it was working out. Ant and Dec had never been anything but pleasant to my face but, clearly, they didn’t want me on the show.’

Subsequently, the two Geordie presenters wrote in their autobiography that when Kelly turned up for her first day on the set of BGT, she asked them what they did on the show, and had clearly not watched any of the previous programmes.

Kelly’s version of events is totally different. She says: ‘For the record, I didn’t go begging for a job on Britain’s Got Talent . Simon Cowell approached me and I think his intentions were completely honest. He had seen how X Factor worked when he brought in Cheryl Cole, so he tried to do the same thing with BGT.

‘Basically, I just don’t think Ant and Dec liked me. Their egos are such that they were saying to themselves “How dare she think she can come on to our show?”, and since then they’ve been very vocal about their displeasure at me being there.’

Ant and Dec have made no secret of the fact they resented Cowell bringing in another judge without consulting them and, perhaps unfairly, may have taken out their resentment on Kelly.

‘I have to say it’s the first experience I have had of that kind of behaviour and I was shocked by it, actually. I would like to apologise to them now if they thought I didn’t know who they were. I do think they are very talented guys who are great at what they do. People love them on television and that’s why they work consistently.’

She adds: ‘Everybody else on the show was great. Amanda Holden was put into a very difficult position because the press were trying to make out that it was Amanda versus Kelly, like they did with Cheryl and Dannii Minogue on X Factor, but she was very supportive.

‘And about three days into me working there I had a conversation with Piers Morgan who was very sweet. I told him that I didn’t think it was going to work out and that I felt very uncomfortable, but he told me I was doing good.

‘Of course, Simon was oblivious to it all because he was off doing American Idol at the same time and not really caring much about what was happening. But I have seen him since and he told me that if it had been down to him I would have still been on the show because he thought I was great.

‘He actually said: “You don’t even want to know what was going on behind the scenes. It is just a case of some people not wanting you there.”

‘It was horrible at the time. I went home and wrote a letter putting down all my feelings. It was a letter from my ego to the egos of those who were against me.

‘And that’s what it was all about – a clash of egos. My ego was dented, but it didn’t affect the way I am or how I feel about the industry. As for Ant and Dec, good luck to them. They are rich and they are happy, but they won’t be in my autobiography, even if I am in theirs!’

It is not the first, nor, one suspects, will it be the last, time that Kelly’s ‘talents’ have come under unfavourable scrutiny. Ever since her stint as a presenter on Channel 4′s The Big Breakfast – replacing Denise Van Outen to co-host the show with Johnny Vaughan – she has been ridiculed.

On Big Breakfast, the producer even sent a memo making sure Kelly didn’t have any long words to pronounce on her autocue. But to be fair to the girl, she was only 19 and, by her own admission, didn’t know which way was up.

Stints hosting other shows, such as Celebrity Love Island, have been equally derided, but while the barbs might hurt, they don’t appear to have fatally wounded this remarkably optimistic young woman, who is about to take over from Jerry Hall in the West End smash hit Calendar Girls.

Kelly is no fool. She has a body and looks to die for which, along with her 32-E boobs, have made her the idol of the glamour magazines. She is constantly at the top of men’s and women’s polls of the most desirable women in the world.
