As Oscars go, this one stuck pretty much to the script.

There were no major upsets in the acting categories. Everyone who was expected to win, won.

Kathryn Bigelow’s David toppled James Cameron’s Goliath – and made history in the process.

Bigelow became the first female director to win an Oscar for Iraq bomb drama The Hurt Locker, while Cameron’s sci-fi spectacular Avatar went away with three technical awards.

The wait for a sci-fi best picture winner continues.

Speaking after the ceremony, Bigelow said she hoped she would be the first of many female directors to win.

She said: “I’d love to just think of myself as a film-maker, and I long for the day when a modifier can be a moot point.
“But I’m ever grateful if I can inspire some young, intrepid, tenacious male or female film-maker and have them feel that the impossible is possible and never give up on your dream.”

Clyde Shelton is an upstanding family man whose wife and daughter are brutally murdered during a home invasion. When the killers are caught, Nick Rice, a hotshot young Philadelphia prosecutor, is assigned to the case. Over his objections, Nick is forced by his boss to offer one of the suspects a light sentence in exchange for testifying against his accomplice. Fast forward ten years. The man who got away with murder is found dead and Clyde Shelton coolly admits his guilt. Then he issues a warning to Nick: Either fix the flawed justice system that failed his family, or key players in the trial will die. Soon Shelton follows through on his threats, orchestrating from his jail cell a string of spectacularly diabolical assassinations that can be neither predicted nor prevented. Philadelphia is gripped with fear as Shelton’s high-profile targets are slain one after another and the authorities are powerless to halt his reign of terror. Only Nick can stop the killing, and to do so he must outwit this brilliant sociopath in a harrowing contest of wills in which even the smallest misstep means death. With his own family now in Shelton’s crosshairs, Nick finds himself in a desperate race against time facing a deadly adversary who seems always to be one step ahead.
Genres: Thriller
Running Time: 2 hr. 2 min
R for strong bloody brutal violence and torture, a scene of rape and pervasive language.

Zac Efron has revealed that he would love to appear in a West End show.
The High School Musical star, who shot to fame with singing roles, said that he is looking for a part that will help him “break” into the theatre world.
Bang Showbiz quotes him as saying: “I would love to if I could find the right opportunity. I think it’s a matter of time to be honest but I don’t know, I just want to make a break, so it’s harder to be very specific.”
Efron added that he gave co-star Christian McKay advice on the set of new film Me and Orson Welles, saying: “He had like small questions here and there. But he is a quick student that guy, in a matter of weeks he had completely transformed.”

Me and orson Welles.
ZAC Efron says he accepted his role in new film Me and Orson Wells because he wanted to try something “fresh”. The actor who shot to fame playing clean-cut Troy Bolton in Disney’s popular High School Musical movie franchise admits he was looking for something a bit “riskier” when took the part.
“I was looking for that opportunity, something fresh,” Zac said, insisting he wasn’t concerned his large, mostly teen fan base, wouldn’t have heard of Orson Welles.

Isabella “Bella” Swan is thrown an eighteenth birthday party by Edward Cullen, the vampire she loves, and his vampire family. While unwrapping a gift, she receives a paper cut. Jasper, although attempting a non-human diet, is overwhelmed by the scent of blood and tries to attack Bella. In an attempt to keep Bella safe from the world of vampires, Edward leaves the town of Forks. Bella becomes depressed and seeks comfort with Jacob Black, an old family friend who eases her pain over losing Edward.

Bella and Jacob begin spending a lot of time together, and Bella soon discovers that the rush of adrenaline present when she places herself in dangerous situations stimulates a hallucination of Edward’s voice. Bella begins seeking out dangerous behavior, such as motorcycle riding, to keep Edward’s voice with her. Meanwhile, Jacob finds out that he is a werewolf. Initially, he tries to keep this secret from Bella, but he eventually reveals as much as he can without betraying his pack. After Bella attempts cliff-diving, she gets caught in a riptide and is rescued by Jacob.

At the same time, Alice Cullen, Edward’s vampire sister who has visions of the future, has a vision of Bella jumping off the cliff. Presuming Bella is dead, Alice rushes to Forks to check on Charlie, Bella’s father, while Edward calls Bella’s home. Jacob answers and informs Edward that Charlie is “at the funeral”, referring to that of a man in town who had a heart attack, but Edward draws the conclusion that he means Bella’s funeral. Desperate after Bella’s supposed death, Edward flees to Italy to see the Volturi, peace-keeping vampires who would be able to kill Edward, granting him leave of a world without Bella.
Bella and Alice rush to Italy to stop Edward, and save him before it is too late. Before they leave Italy, the Volturi tell them that Bella, a human who knows of the existence of vampires, must either be killed or changed into a vampire herself. After they return to Forks, Edward explains to Bella that he only left in order to protect her, and she forgives him. The book ends with the Cullens voting in favor of Bella being changed into a vampire, much to Edward’s dismay.
Yet as of today, the 23-year-old who hails from the middle-class streets of Barnes in south west London, is about the most bankable star on the planet.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon, a film sequel in which Pattinson stars as the protagonist vampire, broke the all-time record for opening day takings in America at the weekend.
The movie took an astonishing £44 million at the box office – and some £15 million of that came from midnight screenings across the country as fans queued through the night for the first possible chance to see it.

The £44 million overtook the domestic first day record previously held by The Dark Knight, the Batman film which had a £40 million opening day last year.
New Moon beat opening day box office sales in America, which is traditionally the biggest film market, from franchises such as Harry Potter, the Pirates of the Caribbean, X Men and Star Wars.

In the UK, tickets for New Moon, which went on general release on Friday, sold out in some cinemas back in September.

Director: Lone Scherfig

Running time: 95 minutes
THE problem with coming-of-age movies is that the hero is too often a passive receptor and, despite the hip oldies on the soundtrack, the result says nothing that dozens of previous coming-of-age movies haven’t already.

An Education is a glorious exception. Based on journalist Lynn Barber’s trenchant memoir, it stars Carey Mulligan as Barber aged 16, renamed Jenny and already a headstrong overachiever. Impatient with unFab 1961 Twickenham, she fancies herself more sophisticated than her friends, modelling herself on Juliette Greco, adding n’est-ce pas to her sentences at the drop of un chapeau, reports The Scotsman.

Tethered to a home where it’s pushing the boat out to unwrap the Battenberg cake, she sees university as her only escape from cello, homework and fussing parents Alfred Molina and Cara Seymour. In fact, her father seems more determined for her to get into Oxford than she is, examining everything she does through the filter of an admissions officer.

Then, during a downpour, another, smoother option pulls up beside her in a maroon Bristol and tells her that, while she shouldn’t take a lift from a strange man, he can give her cello a lift in the car and she can walk alongside and chat. Innocuous compromises are a speciality of David (Peter Sarsgaard), who is smooth, seductive and nearly twice her age. Apparently rich in a slightly shady way, he offers a shortcut to glamour, travel and excitement, and Jenny’s parents are easily charmed into letting him take her out for meals with his racy pals Danny (Dominic Cooper) and the gorgeous but fearsomely vacuous Helen (Rosamund Pike).

Nick Hornby’s adaptation is funny, intelligent and bracingly unsentimental, especially when it comes to rites-of-passage clichés. Instead of the usual ecstatic sheet rummages, the film quickly cuts to the post-coitus couple, with Jenny noting: “All that poetry and all those songs about something that lasts no time at all.” Nor is she oblivious to David’s deceptions; in fact she colludes with him.

The only opposition to Jenny’s new boyfriend comes from her teachers. Emma Thompson’s tart headmistress has a touch of Thatcher battleship, while Jenny’s kindly English teacher (Olivia Williams) hates to see her prize pupil throw away an education, only for Jenny to zing back that “It’s not enough to educate us any more. You have to tell us why you’re doing it.”

This story is a cameo of a particular family at a particular time: London, the 1960s, lower-middle-class parents with a brilliant only daughter. Love was regulated. Jenny’s parents were focused on hauling their daughter – and themselves – up a notch by the education rope.

Jenny’s naivete eventually falls heavily upon her, although at no point does she completely cave in when her world crumbles. Instead the film suggests she has gained rather than lost.

This is Carey Mulligan’s big moment. She was 22, not 16 when the movie was shot but her Jenny – bright but unformed in uniform yet a chic match for Sarsgaard in upswept beehive – is the epitome of a promising young person.

Unlike most stars who originally found fame through their charm and good looks, George Clooney contemplates his graying hair and onset of middle-age with ease.

“I’m old,” the 48-year-old actor said with a laugh. “It’s an interesting thing to watch yourself grow older on screen.

“I was watching Up In The Air and I thought, ‘Jesus, who’s the old gray-haired guy?’ And it was me. I never wear makeup for movies and now it’s starting to show.” Clooney, who is often referred to as the 21st Century’s Cary Grant, mused: “It’s funny, because most male actors work with actresses who are considerably younger. But earlier in my career I was working with a lot of actresses who were my age or older so people always thought I was older anyway; and now I’m going through this thing with people thinking I’m about 60.

“But I’m kind of comfortable with getting older because it’s better than the other option, which is being dead. So I’ll take getting older.” George Clooney was his usual dry, genial self as he chatted in a suite at London’s Dorchester Hotel. He is in town for the London Film Festival opening night premiere of the animated film The Fantastic Mr. Fox, director Wes Anderson’s first venture into animation, for which Clooney supplies the voice of the title character. He also stars in two other films which are being screened at the festival, the romantic comedy-drama Up In The Air and the black comedy The Men Who Stare At Goats.
George Clooney was facing journalists on day two of the London film festival ahead of the UK premiere of his film The Men Who Stare at Goats, based on Jon Ronson’s book of the same name.

He said he was sympathetic to journalists. “I’m the son of a newsman, I grew up around news,” he said. “I can understand newspapers are losing subscribers. It’s a tricky thing, you have to sell papers, I get it.

“The problem is that there is so little reporting any more, somebody will write a story and it will be in 100’s different outlets and you have no recourse. It will be false and you’ll go ‘it’s not true’ and they’ll go ‘we’re not saying that, we’re saying a London tabloid has said it’. So they’re just reprinting and reprinting things that aren’t necessarily true.

“It used to be two reliable sources and that doesn’t seem to exist any more. I understand the problem, I understand why it happens but it certainly is an issue.”
Clooney’s co-star, Kevin Spacey, was less sympathetic. He said: “I don’t get it. I don’t understand the notion of people who might call themselves journalists who would just make up stuff. I don’t understand it as a function of a human being. I don’t understand why that’s of interest, to write something that is false. If you even bother to say ‘that story has no wit of truth to it’ they write that you denied that that story is true, which is not the same thing as saying what we wrote was absolutely wrong.

“There are some people who choose to fight these things in the courts and there are those who say ‘you know what, it’s yesterday’s news, it’s fish wrapping and I’m not going to worry about it’.”

Clooney and Spacey spoke after yesterday’s Guardian reported on a soon-to-be released film called Starsuckers in which the documentary makers fed false celebrity stories to newspapers and the majority found their way into print unchecked.

In an alternate reality, lying — even the concept of a lie — does not even exist. Everyone — from politicians to advertisers to the man and woman on the street — speaks the truth and nothing but the truth with no thought of the consequences. But when a down-on-his-luck loser named Mark suddenly develops the ability to lie, he finds that dishonesty has its rewards. In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark easily lies his way to fame and fortune. But lies have a way of spreading, and Mark begins to realize that things are getting a little out of control when some of his tallest tales are being taken as, well, gospel. With the entire world now hanging on his every word, there is only one thing Mark has not been able to lie his way into: the heart of the woman he loves.

This movie won’t be nominated for an Oscar and critics hate it. But as long as you don’t take yourself too seriously, you’ll be entertained and laugh throughout the film. I enjoyed it, and felt it was worth the money. But in comparison to Sandra Bullock’s last movie, “The Proposal”, “All About Steve” isn’t as good. Bradley Cooper’s character didn’t bring nearly as much to the film as Ryan Reynolds’ did in “The Proposal”.
